Como recordarás, hace un mes que instalamos cortinas en nuestra sala, y nos encanta. El cambio principal, además de que el espacio luce más completo y vestido, es que las ventanas y las paredes se ven más amplias, y eso, en un espacio pequeño como el nuestro, es increíble.

As you may remember, about a month ago, we installed curtains in our living room, and we love it. The main change, besides having better window treatments, is the windows and walls look so much larger, and that is really appreciated, especially in a small space, like ours.

Ustedes ya se saben la historia del antes y el después, sin embargo, hay un par de secretos que no les he contado, y hoy les voy a compartir.

You know the before and after story, however, there are a couple of secrets I haven’t told anyone, and I’ve finally managed to have some time to spill the beans.

Primero: Para lograr que las cortinas se vieran como yo quería, tuve que meter tijera. Las cortinas originales eran así:

First: To get the curtains to look the way I wanted, I had to use my scissors. They originally came like this:

Pero yo no las quería con esos “tirantes”, especialmente porque no iba a poner otra cortina encima de ellas. Así que sacrificando altura por vista, me decidí a arreglar el asunto fácilmente:

I didn’t want them hanging like that, especially because I wasn’t putting any other curtains in front of them. So, sacrifying height for looks, I decided to tackle the issue easily:

Out curtain suspenders, hello new window treatments!

El segundo truco, es muy conocido, pero por si acaso tú no lo has escuchado, aquí te va:

“Para crear la sensación de amplitud, coloca las cortinas lo más arriba y a los lados posible”.

The other trick is very popular, but in case you haven’t heard of it, here it goes:

“Create the feeling of larger windows, by hanging the curtains high and wide”.

Este truco es muy sencillo, y el cambio es impresionante… en este dibujo que hice, las dos paredes y las dos ventanas son del mismo tamaño. Lo que cambia, son las cortinas. En nuestro caso, las persianas que teníamos estaban colgadas como en el segundo dibujo: bajas, angostas y cortitas… en pocas palabras, fatal.

This is a very simple trick, and the change really is huge. In this illustration I made, both walls and windows are the same size; the curtains are not. In our case, the shades where hanging like the second picture: low, narrow, and short. Not nice.

El día de hoy, una transformación muy inspiradora. Una cocina regular convertida en un hermoso espacio, lista para aparecer en cualquier revista de diseño. ¿Lo mejor? Toda la transformación corrió a cargo de la dueña de la casa, con poca experiencia previa, pero eso sí, con mucha motivación. No pude evitar acordarme de nuestra cocina, y cómo hace ya 2 años nosotros también decidimos pintarla de blanco, iniciando así nuestra primera transformación (toda la historia aquí).

Today, we’re talking about a really inspiring makeover. An ordinary kitchen transformed into an extraordinary space, ready for any magazine shoot. The best thing of all? It’s a DIY project, so it’s pretty motivating. I couldn’t help remembering our own kitchen, and how 2 years ago we also decided to paint it white, starting our first ever makeover story.

¿Verdad que es hermoso? Cristina hizo todo: pintó los gabinetes de blanco, instaló molduras y mosaicos… en fin, ¡una transformación increíble!

Por supuesto que pintar la carpintería es un trabajo duro y tardado, pero no imposible. Es una forma realmente económica de renovar la cocina, con excelentes resultados. Yo, personalmente, me siento muy feliz de haberlo hecho, y lo volvería hacer. Es sólo cuestión de animarse ;)

Painting the kitchen cabinets is hard work, but it’s not impossible. It’s a cheap way to transform the kitchen, with amazing results. I personally feel really happy to have done it, and would do it again. It’s just a matter of making up your mind.

Hace muchos meses que iniciamos con la renovación del cuarto de nuestra hija, pero desde que le mandamos hacer su escritorio y repisas ya no habíamos tenido avances –hasta hoy. Finalmente me decidí a hacer los pequeños cambios que teníamos pendientes y debo decir que me encanta cómo se alegró y mejoró el espacio. En caso de que no lo recuerden, así lucía hasta ayer:

We started our daughter’s room makeover several months ago, but since we had her desk and shelves made, we hadn’t done anything else –that is, until today. I finally decided to tackle little changes we had overdue, and I must say I’m loving how the space looks more joyful and fresh. In case you don’t remember, this is how it looked like until yesterday:

En realidad son muy pocos y sencillos los cambios, pero creo que hacen una gran diferencia en cuanto a que el cuarto se ve más cálido, divertido y completo. Por supuesto, ya tenemos la silla… pero además, coloqué unas pequeñas lámparas de led que había comprado hace tiempo.

The changes are few and rather simple, but I like the huge difference they make. The room looks fun and more complete. Of course, we have a chair now, but I also put little led lighting underneath the lower shelf. I had bought them quite a while ago (shame on me!).

Son muy fáciles de poner, sólo se pegan con cinta de doble cara y ya.

They are really easy to “install”. I just used double side tape.

Los cuadros son el juego “Chic” del catálogo VNG. Me encanta porque van muy bien con el tono aqua que ya teníamos en la pared. :)

The wall art is from VNG. I love how well they go with the aqua tone my daughter chose for the wall.

Las mariposas son los viniles “Butterfly”, también del catálogo VNG, de Vianney.

The butterflies are wall decals, also from VNG.

Los demás detalles son los que nuestra hija ya tenía en su cuarto.

En el marco, una pequeña reproducción de una de mis acuarelas, al lado de la caja de cartón, pintada por ella hace un par de años…

In the frame, a small reproduction of one of my watercolors, next to the cardboard box painted by our daughter a couple of years ago.

Todavía nos faltan algunas otras cosas, pero por lo pronto este pequeño gran avance me tiene muy contenta. A ti ¿qué te parece? ¡Me encantará conocer tu opinión!

Todo mundo adora las buenas transformaciones, ¿cierto? Mejor aún las que se hacen en poco tiempo y con poco presupuesto. Justo de eso se trata el post de hoy: un “antes y después” realizado en 2 días y con $150 dólares. ¿Listo para las fotos?

So everybody likes a good “before and after”, right? Better yet when it’s made with little time and a low budget. Well, then you’ll love today’s post: a bedroom makeover made in 2 days and with only $150. Ready for the photos?

Vaya cambio, ¿no crees? Me gusta mucho cómo se siente el espacio con la pared gris oscura y los muebles en blanco. De esa manera, los accesorios con colores brillantes lucen lindos y frescos. Obviamente para conseguir una transformación con tan poco dinero, muchas cosas se hicieron; no se compraron. Por ejemplo, la cabecera, el buró, los cojines, los relojes, todos fueron proyectos diy (o hum: hágalo usted mismo), y eso me encanta. De hecho, cada que veo una transformación así, me dan ganas de tomar mis latas de pintura y atacar nuestra casa en mis mejores fachas. Si no tuviera que ir a la oficina, ya estaría haciéndolo (es mi sueño, lo saben, ¿verdad?).

Hablando de oficina, es hora ya de ir a trabajar… he tenido semanas muy pesadas y por eso no he podido pasar a visitar blogs y comentar… prometo ponerme al corriente prontito :)

Talk about makeovers, right? I love how the space feels fresh and modern with the dark grey wall and the white elements, and it makes the color accesories pop. Obviously, transforming something with that little money means diy everywhere, which I totally love. For instance, the headboard, side table, pillows, clocks, all of them where diy projects. Actually, this kind of makeovers make me so anxious to take my brushes and paints and tackle a room. If I didn’t have to go to the office I would (you know I would).

Speaking about that, it’s time to go to work… by the way, I’ve been having lots of things to do everywhere, so I’m really sorry for not visiting my blog friends and commenting… I promise to catch up with that really soon. :)

Ay, las paredes con cuadros… siempre me fascinan, así que no es raro que vuelva a postear sobre ellas (¿verdad?). Hay tantas fotos inspiradoras que se tienen que compartir, y éstas son las últimas que me tienen suspirando. Hay para todos los gustos y estilos: vintage, clásico, contemporáneo, moderno… espero las disfrutes ;)

Oh, those gallery walls! They always make me sigh, so it’s completely normal for me to post about them yet again (right?). There are so many inspiring photos that must be shared. These are the last ones I’ve been drooling over. Plenty of inspiration no matter what decorating style you crave: vintage, classic, contemporary, modern… 

Antes se decía que para lograr un buen muro de cuadros había que tener algo uniforme -ya fuera el tamaño, el tipo de marco, el color, etc., sin embargo, ya tenemos muchos ejemplos en los que se usan todo tipo de marcos, imágenes, colores y objetos con mucho atino. Por supuesto, tiene su chiste; hay cierto balance que se tiene que conseguir. Por otro lado, los acomodos más tradicionales y equilibrados también me parecen muy hermosos (basta ver ésta últimas fotos)… así que, lo único que hace falta es animarse, ¿no crees?

Por cierto, hablando de la última imagen, qué genial idea, la de dividir una foto grande (tipo mapa) en varias pequeñas, y conseguir así un gran impacto. Incluso pareciera una especie de ventana, aunque la vista, por supuesto, sea en blanco y negro… el marco dorado también es un lindo toque.

I used to hear that successful gallery walls had to had something in common: shape, size, frame, color, etc. I’m so glad to keep bumping into spaces where there seems to be nothing in common. There’s an art to properly styling a gallery wall, of course, but I like to think there are no fixed rules about it. On the other hand, I still also like traditional arrangements (just take a look at the bottom two).

By the way, speaking about the last photo, did you notice it’s a huge photograph cut into smaller images? I am so loving it! It even seems like a window (the view is black and white, I know, but still), and the gold frames are to die for.

Es increíble como bastan pocos elementos para lograr rincones bien diseñados y funcionales. En esta casa, se aprovechó un pequeño muro para crear un recibidor con un pequeño librero y un espejo… ¡mira qué bonito quedó!

I’m always amazed to see small functional, well designed spaces. In this house, a narrow wall was used to create an entryway, with a little bookcase and a mirror… I love how pretty it turned out!

Excelente idea para todos nosotros que tenemos espacios pequeños, ¿no crees? Por cierto, lo que más me gusta de este recibidor es el espejo, el cual ayuda a aumentar la sensación de amplitud. Me encanta que no es un espejo tradicional, y que es un proyecto DIY (o HUM: Hágalo Usted Mismo) que hizo Aldo, el dueño de la casa. Básicamente pegó espejos pequeños sobre una tabla, los colgó, y ¡listo! Y de hecho, a mí me parece que las líneas de unión le dan un toque muy especial y original al espejo.

It’s an amazing small space! I love the mirror and how it helps to bring light and add visual space. I also love that it isn’t a traditional mirror, but it’s actually a DIY project Aldo, the owner, made. It’s basically made up of 12 small mirrors, glued to a board. Clever, huh? I even like how the lines give a very special feel to it.

Como ya saben, cada mes un grupo de bloggers “quedamos” o nos reunimos virtualmente para hablar de un espacio en particular. En esta ocasión estoy muy emocionada porque quedamos en uno de mis rincones favoritos: el de la lectura.

As you may know by know, a group of bloggers and I get “together” each month to write about a particular kind of room. I am specially excited today, for we are talking about one of my favorite spaces: reading nooks.

Mis rincones favoritos de lectura son los pequeñitos, ésos que se hacen aprovechando espacios raros, como por ejemplo bajo una ventana o las escaleras. Lugares chiquititos en los que de alguna manera se acomoda un lugar para sentarse y quedan de lo más acogedores. ¡Qué diera por tener una esquinita así en nuestra casa!

El rincón que elegí yo me encanta porque es chiquito, pero está súper bien aprovechado. Se colocó una banca (que además cuenta con almacenamiento debajo), cojines como asiento y decorativos y una lámpara sencilla de estilo industrial. Pero además, se aprovechó la parte baja de la ventana a manera de repisa para poner libros, velas y hasta un topiario divino… para suspirar :)

My favorite reading nooks are the tiny ones under odd spaces, such as windows or stairs. Little places arranged to create a sitting, cozy space. How I wish I had such a corner at home!

So, I love the nook I chose because it’s small and oh so pretty! I love how all the space is well used, with the bench having under storage, the cushions and pillows, the lovely industrial lamp, and the way the window is used as shelf to place books, candles and a topiary. Sigh!

Hasta hace poco, yo tenía la idea de que los colores oscuros son equivocados para cuartos pequeños. Es lo que siempre te dicen, ¿no? Es algo así como una regla de oro en la decoración. Pero luego, pinté una de las paredes de mi cocina con negro pizarrón, y me encantó.  Y justo hace dos días, publiqué el post del comedor transformado en estudio… donde el protagonista era el negro y el lugar se veía incluso más amplio que antes. Y para terminar la semana, me encuentro con un espacio que nuevamente desafía la idea de que los colores oscuros no funcionan para espacios pequeños. Y ¿qué espacio más pequeño que un baño?

Until recently, I had the idea that dark colors are wrong for small spaces. It’s what they always say, right? The golden rule in decorating 101. But then I painted a wall in our kitchen with black chalkboard paint, and I loved it. Then two days ago, I posted about a dining room transformed into library where black was the absolute star (and the space looked even more spacious). Now I bump into a challenging tiny room proving once again that dark colors can work in small spaces.

Adoro el contraste del color carbón / azul marino con el blanco de la taza y las molduras, así como con los detalles amarillos. A pesar de ser un baño chiquito, se ve muy moderno y elegante al mismo tiempo. Por supuesto, ayudan mucho los detalles y la decoración, como por ejemplo la tela que se usó para la ventana, la repisa y la fotografía blanco y negro enmarcada en blanco. ¡Incluso las repisas de metal lucen bien (y yo que me reuso tanto a ellas!)!

I love the contrast between the charcoal/navy tone with the white on the moldings, as well as the yellow details. As small as it is, this bathrooms looks modern and elegant, all at the same time. Then of course, the decor, details and organizing is amazing. I love the fabric used for the window treatment, the chevron shelf, the black and white photo framed in white… I even love how the metallic shelving system looks so pretty and neat (to think I refuse to use one in our own bathroom!).

El viernes ha llegado, finalmente, y el lunes nos espera un dulce regreso a clases!!!!! Así que a descansar mucho y disfrutarlo al máximo… ;)

It’s Friday and it’s our last Summer vacation weekend. Our daughter’s back to school next Monday. Enjoy your weekend!

Recrear el look escandinavo en tu hogar puede ser más sencillo y económico de lo que crees, y para muestra, esta casa ubicada en Estados Unidos. Llena de buenas ideas totalmente fáciles de imitar, este hogar transmite la sensación de los espacios nórdicos de una manera muy atinada. Ahora bien, hablemos de lo que nos interesa: las buenas ideas. Las mesas-tronco de la sala fueron un poste de electricidad caído que la dueña tomó del camino. Los lockers comprados a un gimnasio eran amarillos y morados, pero la dueña pacientemente los lijó y pulió hasta darles el look industrial. En la cocina, el modelo más económico de ikea se combinó con un azulejo tipo “subway” prácticamente regalado de home depot. La recámara principal es quizá la mejor evidencia de los buenos trucos que usó la dueña. Por un lado, en lugar de mueble de cama usó tarimas o palés, y por el otro, retiró la alfombra dejando al descubierto el piso preexistente. Y como mesa de noche, una bella silla eames. No se necesita nada más. :)

Recreating a Scandinavian look for your home might be easier and simpler than you might think, at least that’s what this gorgeous home filled with clever ideas to imitate taught me. The living room stump tables were actually a fallen electrical pole and the YMCA lockers were patiently sanded until all paint fell off. In the kitchen, Ikea’s most basic line of cabinets mixed with inexpensive Home Depot subway tiles. The bedroom is my absolute favorite evidence of great ideas, with the pallet bed frame, and the plywood floor. Instead of a night table, a beautiful Eames chair. Absolutely gorgeous. :)

Hablar de cabeceras es algo recurrente en Casa Haus. Y es que hay tantas, pero tantas ideas para hacer cabeceras increíbles. En esta ocasión, encontramos cabeceras con puertas –en la primera foto son puertas de clóset y en la segunda son puertas completas, para seguir con una muy iteresante cabecera hecha con una cortina de tela sencilla a la cual se le han escrito frases interesantes con un marcador para tela con distintos tipos de letra (buenísima idea si tienes letra bonita). Luego, una cabecera normal, pero pintada con un motivo de hojas y flores que le dan un toque muy especial (sin duda, las almohadas y cojines ayudan mucho). Finalizamos con una propuesta sumamente interesante, una cabecera ideal para almacenar y mostrar cosas, hecha de nada más y nada menos que cajones… ¡wow!

Así que, ya no hay pretextos. Si tu cama no tiene cabecera, ya sabes que hay mucho que puedes hacer :)

Talking about headboard ideas is a common thing here, in Casa Haus. There are sooooo many good ideas out there! This time, we have two different rooms with doors as headboards –the first picture has closet doors, the second, regular ones. Then, we find a very interesting headboard made with a curtain panel with different quotes written with a fabric marker (an easy idea if you have pretty handwriting). The next one is an ordinary headboard, but painted with flowers and leaves that make ir really pretty (the beautiful pillows make it even better). Finally, a very interesting idea, a headboard make with drawers… wow!

So no more excuses… if your bed has no headboard, there are plenty of ideas out there!
