Una de las puertas de ayer, justo la única que estaba al “natural” despertó en mí muchos deseos por conocer el interior que albergaba. Curiosa como soy, no paré hasta encontrar la casa dueña de una puerta tan original. Resulta ser que no se trata precisamente de una casa, sino de un granero que fue restaurado y convertido en una casa hecha y derecha… de esas que nos hacen suspirar.

One of yesterday’s doors, the only “natural” one, made me very interested to find out how the inside of the house looked like. Curious as I am, I didn’t stop until I found the owner of such a beautiful door. Turns out, it’s not exactly a house, but instead a barn, converted into a gorgeous contemporary home, the kind that makes us sigh and smile. :)

No cabe duda que es un hogar lleno de encanto, donde todos los detalles fueron cuidados y donde se mezcla con mucho gusto y equilibrio el aspecto rústico del granero, con la estética moderna de algunos muebles y accesorios así como los detalles industriales. La conversión fue llevada a cabo por la firma Shed Architects.

Such a lovely home, where all details have been carefully placed, and where the rustic aspect of the barn is tastefully mixed with the modern aesthetics of some pieces and accesories, and then, once again, with the industrial details. The conversion was made by Shed Architects.

Este 30 de abril es el día del niño, y para celebrarlo un proyecto diy (hazlo tú mismo) que estoy segura les encantará: hacer una medusa de mar. Esta actividad ayudará a desarrollar su creatividad, imaginación y conciencia ecológica, ya que es una excelente manera de reutilizar materiales que ya tenemos en casa. Diseñada por mi hija, con algunas aportaciones mías, ¡espero lo disfruten juntos!!!!!

On April 30th we celebrate Children’s Day in Mexico, and so I thought I’d share with you an all-time Casa Haus original favorite: our how to make a jellyfish tutorial. This is an easy and fun activity to help develop their creativity, imagination, and eco-concience, reusing stuff already in our homes. Designed by my daughter, with a little help from her mom, I really hope you enjoy it!

Paso 1: Si quieres hacer tus medusas de color, pon unas gotitas de colorante artificial.

Step 1: If you want to try for colored jellyfish, use a few drops of food coloring on your bag.

Paso 2: Usa tu dedo para pintar la bolsa. Prepárate: ¡los dedos te quedarán muy manchados!!!!

Step 2: Use your fingers to paint the bag. Beware of blue fingers!

Paso 3: Voltea la bolsa por el revés. Coloca una liga donde quieras marcar la división entre la cabeza y la umbrella (la parte que parece paraguas). La distancia depende del tamaño de tu bolsa, pero es aproximádamente dos terceras partes de la misma.

Step 3: Turn the bag inside-out. Use the rubber band to mark the division between head and umbrella. The distance depends on the size of your bag, but it’s somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3 of the bag.

Paso 4: Una vez que lo hayas hecho te quedará algo así.

Step 4: Once you put the rubber band, it should look like this.

Paso 5: Usa otra bolsa para cortar espirales. En este paso el niño necesitará tu ayuda.

Step 5: Use another bag to cut out spirals. This is a step for you, since it’s a little tricky for kids.

Paso 6: Coloca el palito por dentro, y sujétalo con otra liga. Aprovecha esta misma liga para colocar las espirales por una de las puntas (la del centro del espiral). Esto formará los tentáculos. Haz tantos como necesites.

Step 6: Place the stick inside, and secure it with another rubber band. Use this same rubber band to place the spirals in place. (You should take the spirals by the center tip). The spirals are very important for they make pretty tentacles. Do as many as you need (the more, the merrier =).

¡Listo! Si dejas la bolsa sin pintar, te quedarán hermosas medusas blancas.

Done! If you leave the bags unpainted, they will make gorgeous white jellyfish.

Estas medusas son increíblemente fáciles de hacer, y los resultados quedan hermosos. Al subir y bajar el palito de madera, la medusa se mueve justo como se mueven las medusas reales, así que queda perfecta. A mí me encanta porque son una manera muy creativa de reutilizar materiales comunes, como la bolsa de plástico.

La primavera está a punto de llegar, pero todavía le quedan algunos días al invierno. Preparémonos para despedirlo con una cabaña sumamente inspiradora en uno de mis estilos favoritos: el escandinavo. Por si fuera poco, añadimos algunos detalles rústicos, como madera y tejidos naturales… de esos que aportan la justa dosis de calidez en la paleta del blanco y negro. ¿Qué dices?

Spring is just around the corner, but there are a few days left of Winter yet. So I say, let’s say goodbye to the chilly weather with a truly inspiring cottage, in one of my most favorite styles of all: Scandinavian. Better yet, let’s add some rustic accents, such as raw wood and natural fibers… giving the perfect dose of warmth to the black and white palette. Shall we? I say we shall :)

Como siempre lo digo, adoro la mezcla de blanco, negro, gris y el café de la madera al natural. Me encanta la calidez que le aporta al ambiente. Esta casa es una muestra viva de que la buena decoración no tiene por qué ser complicada. Los muebles son sencillos, sin pretensiones, pero los accesorios le dan un toque muy especial: cajas reutilizadas, madera recuperada, mimbre tejido, frascos de vidrio, la gran lámpara industrial… en fin, todo me hace suspirar :) Por si fuera poco esas vistas de la montaña y el mar… ¡qué ganas de estar ahí!

As I’m always saying, I love the mix of black, white, grey, and wood tones. I love the warmth it adds to the room. This house shows great spaces don’t need to be expensive or complicated. The pieces of furniture are very simple, but the accents are amazing: reclaimed boxes and wood, natural fibers, glass, and the huge industrial pendant… it’s all so gorgeous together :) And then, of course, the mountain and bay views –how I wish I was there!

Hace algunas semanas me invitaron al Open House de un departamento increíble, construido dentro de tan sólo un contenedor. Aunque ya había escrito sobre casas en contenedores, nunca había tenido la oportunidad de conocer este tipo de obras, mucho menos en nuestra ciudad. Con un espacio total de 90m2, este departamento (que además tiene la cualidad de ser móvil) muestra que la arquitectura en contenedores es ya una realidad, capaz de ofrecer soluciones innovadoras para los retos de la vida actual.

A few weeks ago I was invited to an Open House event. They were showing an amazing apartment built within a single container. Even though I had posted about container homes before, I had never seen one. With a total area of 969 sq feet, this mobile home proves that container architecture is a closer reality than one would think of, capable of bringing innovative solutions to modern living.

El estilo industrial me cautivó desde su exterior y la sorpresa fue mayor a medida que subí las escaleras para adentrarme en él.

Its industrial style outside captivated me, but the surprise was bigger as I stepped inside.

El proyecto es obra del Arquitecto tapatío Taufic Gashaan, quien es un verdadero pionero en la arquitectura en contenedores, no sólo en México, sino en el mundo. El diseño interior se realizó en conjunto con la firma Karen Collignon. Cuenta con dos recámaras, dos baños completos, sala, cocina y comedor y viene con todo lo que se muestra; listo para ser habitado.

Me encantó ver cómo en un espacio tan pequeño hay lugar para todo y se tiene la sensación de amplitud, a pesar del uso de colores oscuros y mucha textura. Además, el departamento se siente muy cálido y acogedor, contrario a lo que se suele pensar respecto a que la construcción en contenedores es fría.

El departamento es un prototipo que ya se está vendiendo para distintos proyectos (desde uso personal, hasta para hoteles boutique) ya que por su movilidad puede ser llevado literalmente a cualquier parte del mundo

This project was built by local Architect Taufic Gashaan, a true pioneer in container architecture, not only in Mexico, but elsewhere. The interior design was made together with Karen Collignon. It’s got two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, living room, kitchen and dining room, and it comes equipped with everything you see.

I was really amazed at how the space doesn’t feel small and there’s room for everything, in spite of the use of dark colors and lots of texture. Besides, the apartment feels warm and cozy, opposite to what people usually think about containers.

This apartment is being sold for all kinds of different projects (from personal home to luxury boutique hotels) due to its mobility for it can literally be taken to any part of the world.

Amazing!

Hace muchos años tuve la suerte de encontrarme con una venta muy interesante: la biblioteca de una escuela de alemán estaba por cerrar, y prácticamente estaban regalando los libros.

A long time ago, I had the luck of bumping into a quite interesting sale: the local German school was closing its library, and they were practically giving the books away.

Al verlos, yo me enamoré. Aunque no hablo alemán, era una lástima pensar que podrían terminar botados en la basura, así que compré tres. Son libros viejos, con detalles hermosos en lomos y cubiertas, y una tipografía divina.

I simply fell in love with them. Although I don’t speak German, it was such a shame to think where they could end up being dumped, so I bought three. They are old, with beautiful  details and typography.

Estuvieron guardados todo este tiempo, hasta la semana pasada que me acordé de ellos y pensé que eran perfectos para convertirlos en “macetas” y decorar mi mesa de centro.

They remained in a bookshelf until last week, when I bumped into them I found them perfect for planters to decorate my coffee table.

Los pasos, son muy sencillos.

And now, the graphic how-to.

Todo lo que necesitas son libros viejos, pegamento líquido, cutter, una bolsa de plástico y tu plantita favorita. Ésta que ves aquí es una suculenta.

All you need is glue, exacto knife, plastic bag and your favorite tiny plant. This one is a succulent.

¡Me encanta! Y se ve muy bonita en nuestra sala…

I love it! And it looks so cute in our living room…

Tip: lo ideal es conseguir un libro grueso, para que sólo tengas que usar uno. En mi caso, los libros eran relativamente angostos, así que tuve que cortar ambos para dar la profundidad que las raíces necesitan.

Nota: Me queda claro que este proyecto no es para cualquier libro. Soy amante de ellos, en ningún momento lo hago como una falta de respeto, ni quiero motivar a la destrucción. Por el contrario, creo que los libros son hermosos, y hay algunos que dejan de cumplir su función (por diferentes motivos), y, en lugar de tirarlos, es entonces cuando se podrían usar de esta manera, o muchas otras, reutilizándolos. :)

Tip: The best books for this DIY are thick ones. In my case, both books were rather slim, so I had to cut and glue both to give the roots the space they needed.

¡Me encanta el toque rústico industrial del metal oxidado en contraste con el verde de las hojas! No cabe duda que para decorar, muchas veces lo único que basta es ser creativo. Ahora lo que me gustaría encontrar son teteras viejas para llevarlo a cabo. :) Una genial idea de Donna, desde funky junk interiors, ideal para este fin de semana que ya casi llega.

Graffiti de musgo. Eso es lo que hoy descubrí navegando en internet, y quedé impresionada. Qué cosa más bella, letras que viven y crecen. Mejor aún, que lo puedas hacer en casa -o donde quieras- con la receta que te comparto más abajo. Qué buena manera de comenzar la semana, ¿no crees?

Moss graffiti. That’s what I discovered today, surfing the net. Wow. I’m totally in love. This is such a beautiful thing, living and growing fonts. Better yet, to be able to do this at home -or wherever you wish to- with the following recipe. Way to kick off the week, don’t you think?

Receta para graffiti de musgo:

- Musgo

- Yogurt natural o cerveza

-1/2 cucharada de azúcar

-Licuadora

Lava el musgo para retirar tierra de las raíces. Colócalo en la licuadora, agrega el yogurt o cerveza, 1/2 cucharada de azúcar y licúa. La mezcla debe quedar como una especie de licuado líquido.

Vacía a un bote y utiliza brocha para aplicar el licuado como si fuera pintura.

Checa diariamente para rociar agua sobre el diseño, o puedes aplicar más mezcla para ayudar al musgo que crezca. Asegúrate de hacerlo en un muro con sombra.

Moss Graffiti Recipe

-Moss

-Buttermilk or beer

-1/2 tsp. sugar

-Blender

Rinse out soil from moss as much as possible. Put it in blender, add buttermilk / beer, and sugar. Mix.

Put into container, then apply on wall with brush, according to your design.

Every second day, reapply mixture. Spritz design with water on alternative day.

This works best if the wall doesn’t receive much sunlight.

Me pregunto si con esta misma receta se podría lograr esta cabecera tan impresionante :)

I wonder if the recipe would work for a headboard like this one. Most impressive :)

Casa Haus se une a la celebración del Día de la Tierra este domingo 22 de abril. Por ello, y porque otra de mis pasiones es la ecología, te comparto un fabuloso descubrimiento, el Patio 77, el primer Bed and Breakfast sustentable ubicado en la Ciudad de México.

In honor of Earth Day, celebrated today and because ecology is another one of my passions in life, I want to share with you my latest eco-discovery: Patio 77, the first ecological Bed and Breakfast in Mexico City.

El Patio 77 calienta el agua por gracias a páneles solares. Además, recupera y filtra el agua de lluvias y regaderas para ser reutilizada en las tazas de baño, en la limpieza y para el riego. No sólo eso, este lugar, ubicado en una casa del siglo XIX y reconocido por el INBA (Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes) utiliza en su decoración muebles recuperados en mercados así como materiales y accesorios reciclados. Qué mejor ejemplo para demostrar que el estilo no está peleado con el cuidado al medio ambiente, ¿no crees? Sin duda, una excelente opción si vas a visitar la Ciudad de México, ya que tiene tarifas accesibles y una fabulosa ubicación.

Patio 77 heats water thanks to solar panels. It also treats a water from rain and showers in order to reuse it in toilets, and watering plants and trees. Located in a XIX century house, it uses recovered furniture and recycled materials and accesories. A great choice if you’re visiting Mexico City, since it’s got excellent rates and the best location.

El asunto de los cables a la hora de cargar el celular suele ser un problema. El cargador por un lado, el celular por otro, y mucho cable de por medio… desorganización total. Todo esto se resuelve con una estación de cargado. Lo novedoso de ésta en particular, es que se trata de un proyecto diy (o hum) de reciclaje. Todo lo que necesitas para empezar es un bote vacío. Cuando veo proyectos así de fáciles y lindos pienso: ¿pero cómo no se me ocurrió a mí? =)

Cords and cables are usually a mess when charging your cell phone. Charger one side, cell on the other, lots of messy cable in between… total chaos! This is solved by a charging station, and there are lots of places where you can buy one – unless you make it yourself. The great thing about this DIY is it’s also an upcycling project. Neat! All you need to get started is an empty bottle. When I see such great DIYs I can’t help but thinking: wish I had thought about this before!

Los pasos son muy fáciles y prácticamente se explican solos, pero aquí van algunas palabras:

-Traza la figura en el bote vacío y limpio (en este caso se usó un bote para crema corporal).

-Corta con tijeras o cutter.

-Lija los bordes y las impresiones de letras para que el bote quede en blanco.

-Cubre con tela y pegamento para decoupage.

¡Listo!

Steps are quite easy and self-explanatory, but here are a few words:

-Trace desired shape on clean and empty bottle (in this case a lotion bottle was used).

-Cut with scissors or exacto knife.

-Sand borders and letters.

-Cover with fabric and mod podge.
