Todo mundo adora las buenas transformaciones, ¿cierto? Mejor aún las que se hacen en poco tiempo y con poco presupuesto. Justo de eso se trata el post de hoy: un “antes y después” realizado en 2 días y con $150 dólares. ¿Listo para las fotos?

So everybody likes a good “before and after”, right? Better yet when it’s made with little time and a low budget. Well, then you’ll love today’s post: a bedroom makeover made in 2 days and with only $150. Ready for the photos?

Vaya cambio, ¿no crees? Me gusta mucho cómo se siente el espacio con la pared gris oscura y los muebles en blanco. De esa manera, los accesorios con colores brillantes lucen lindos y frescos. Obviamente para conseguir una transformación con tan poco dinero, muchas cosas se hicieron; no se compraron. Por ejemplo, la cabecera, el buró, los cojines, los relojes, todos fueron proyectos diy (o hum: hágalo usted mismo), y eso me encanta. De hecho, cada que veo una transformación así, me dan ganas de tomar mis latas de pintura y atacar nuestra casa en mis mejores fachas. Si no tuviera que ir a la oficina, ya estaría haciéndolo (es mi sueño, lo saben, ¿verdad?).

Hablando de oficina, es hora ya de ir a trabajar… he tenido semanas muy pesadas y por eso no he podido pasar a visitar blogs y comentar… prometo ponerme al corriente prontito :)

Talk about makeovers, right? I love how the space feels fresh and modern with the dark grey wall and the white elements, and it makes the color accesories pop. Obviously, transforming something with that little money means diy everywhere, which I totally love. For instance, the headboard, side table, pillows, clocks, all of them where diy projects. Actually, this kind of makeovers make me so anxious to take my brushes and paints and tackle a room. If I didn’t have to go to the office I would (you know I would).

Speaking about that, it’s time to go to work… by the way, I’ve been having lots of things to do everywhere, so I’m really sorry for not visiting my blog friends and commenting… I promise to catch up with that really soon. :)

Una de las cosas que más disfruto de la decoración es su capacidad para transformar espacios. A veces creemos que para cambiar un cuarto se necesita mucho de todo: presupuesto, tiempo, dimensiones, etc. y, si bien es cierto que todo lo anterior ayuda, también lo es que a veces basta tener buen gusto, creatividad y la disposición de ensuciarnos un poquito las manos (o sea, hacer las cosas por nosotros mismos). Este “antes y después” es prueba del poder transformador que tienen detalles meramente decorativos  para convertir un espacio “bueno” en uno increíble e inspirador.

One of the things I like the most about decorating is its capacity to transform spaces. Sometimes we think in order to change a room we need huge amounts of everything: budget, time, space, and so on. I know it helps, but I also believe sometimes all it takes is having taste, creativity, and the willingness to get our hands dirty (the famous d.i.y.). This “before and after” shows how textiles and accesories can turn a “blah” room into a bright and inspiring space.

Como puedes ver, no hay muchos cambios, de hecho, los muebles, lámparas, e incluso la ropa de cama, todos ellos se mantuvieron. ¿Qué hace la diferencia? Cojines, tapetes, cortinas, papel tapiz y demás accesorios. Me encanta cómo se aprovechó la ventana para crear un espacio para relajarse y disfrutar, agregando espacio de almacenaje debajo de la banca, cojines, cortinas, y lo mejor: un candelabro de cristales para ese toque inesperado. Hermoso, ¿verdad?

Detrás de esta transformación se encuentra Emily Henderson, estilista, ganadora del programa Design Star y estrella en su propio show: “Secretos de una estilista”, disponible en latinoamérica a través de Fox Life. Por cierto, uno de mis programas favoritos, lleno de buenos consejos e ideas de decoración. ;)

There aren’t many changes going on in the room. Actually the furniture, lamps, and even bedding were kept. What a huge difference cushions, curtains, wallpaper and other accesories make, huh? I love how odd space under the window was used to create an enjoyable space, with extra storage. The chandelier is an amazing touch!

Behind this makeover is stylist Emily Henderson, also known for being a Design Star winner and host to her own HGTV show Secrets from a Stylist. A favorite of mine, of course.

Sígueme!

No quería dejar que terminara el año sin antes mostrarles los últimos cambios que hemos hecho en casa. Como saben, tenemos 4 años viviendo aquí, y MUY poco a poco hemos ido transformándola en el espacio que soñamos que sea. En este tiempo, prácticamente hemos hecho 2 proyectos grandes: el de la cocina y el de la sala-comedor. Pues bien, justo antes de estas vacaciones empezamos a atacar un nuevo rincón: el cuarto de tv (cuidado: los “antes” de este post pueden asustar mucho. Mírelos bajo su propio riesgo).

I didn´t want to let this year pass by without showing the latest things we’ve been doing around here. As you know, we’ve been living in this place for 4 years now, and VERY little by little we’ve been transforming it into our dream home. In all these years, we’ve practically tackled only 2 spaces: our kitchen, and our living and dining area. Well, not anymore. Right before the holidays we begun our third big project: the TV room (beware: some “before” photos might be a little too scary to see. Do so under your own risk).

Ok. Vayamos en un viaje a través del tiempo. Éste es nuestro rincón de TV hace 4 años. No teníamos mueble, así que usábamos 2 cajones de nuestra hija para sostener la tv y demás triques. Obviamente era súper impráctico por no decir bastante feo, pero era lo único que teníamos.

Ok. Fast rewind to 4 years ago. This was our TV wall. No proper furniture, no nothing. This was obviously sooooo unfunctional and plain ugly, but still, the only thing we had.

Un año después, encontré este mueble (originalmente una mesa de centro de sala) en una venta de cochera y me gustó como mueble de tv. Lo vendían en $500 pesos (el equivalente a $40 dólares), lo cual definitivamente no era una ganga, pero nuevamente, era lo mejor que podíamos tener en el momento con nuestro presupuesto y, además, yo sentía que había en mí el potencial para ser la mujer maravilla de las transformaciones y los DIY (acababa de descubrir los blogs). Ésta era mi mejor oportunidad para mostrarlo (de hecho, uno de mis primeros posts fue la “transformación” de este espacio. Si te quieres reír un ratito, da click aquí para verlo).

Por cierto, la mesa resultó no tener el soporte (obviamente) necesario para sostener la TV y la madera empezó a doblarse, así que pagamos $200 pesos ($18 dólares apróx) para que le pusieran más soporte. En ese entonces yo no sabía nada, pero nada, de carpintería. Fue hasta tiempo después que me di cuenta que nos vieron la cara porque aún esa cantidad fue mucho para la calidad de trabajo que realizaron. Eso sí, el mueble quedó lo suficientemente fuerte para ya no doblarse con el peso de la tele.

A year later, I found this coffee table in a garage sale and liked it. It costed me about 40 dollars, which was still a little out of my budget, but still, the best thing we could afford. Plus, I had just recently discovered blogs, and I really thought I had the potential to become the wonder woman of DIY. This was my best chance to prove it, and I actually attempted to try in one of my very first posts ever. If you feel like laughing you can click here to read it. Estuvimos así 2 años hasta el 2011 en que en mi curso de carpintería hice un mueble de tele como proyecto final. El mueble estuvo todo este tiempo como mesa de apoyo en nuestra sala… hasta ahora…

We were like that for 2 years until last year, when I took the wookcraft course and I chose to make a tv table as final project. I finished it a year ago, but we kept it as a side table in our living room… until now.

Un buen amigo del curso me ayudó a hacer las repisas y por fin, después de mucha espera, ¡las pudimos colgar para completar el espacio y dejarlo mucho más terminado y organizado!

A good friend of mine from the course helped me make the invisible shelves, and after such a long time we finally put them in place, leaving the wall with a more finished look, and best of all: organized!

Tenemos dos cajones perfectos para guardar dvd’s, juegos y demás accesorios.

We now have two drawers for dvd’s, games and other stuff.

Unas repisas lindas que me dan superficie para poder acomodar cosas bonitas y almacenar libros. Ahí está el nacimiento que nos hizo nuestra nena.

I finally have my beloved shelves, where I can place pretty things and books. Actually, the nativity set our daughter made is right there right now.

También puse un platito lindo para poner nuestras llaves.

I also have a cute little plate where to put our keys.

Sé que todavía falta MUCHO qué hacer en este cuarto, especialmente porque del otro lado sigue igual que en el post viejito, pero eso me llena de emoción: ¡mucho qué hacer para el próximo año que ya casi empieza!!!!!!

I know there’s still a LOT to do in this room, especially since the other side is as ugly as it was in that old post I told you, but that makes it all even more exciting: so much more to do next year!!!!

Siempre lo he dicho: adoro los “antes y después”, especialmente aquellos que con cambios pequeños logran grandes transformaciones. Y para hacerlo todavía mejor: los que están hechos en espacios pequeños y que nos permiten a nosotros los mortales, con casas chiquitas, darnos cuenta de que sí es posible transformar nuestro hogar. :) Inspiración pura.

It’s no secret: I love “before and afters”, especially the ones where little changes make huge transformations. To make it even better: the ones that tackle tiny spaces and prove once again that it is possible to transform any place. :)

Lindo, ¿verdad?

¡El espacio es el mismo, y sin embargo se siente tan diferente!!!  Incluso, y a pesar de ser un rincón tan chiquito, el lugar se siente más amplio. Me encanta la decoración con una base blanca y detalles en gris, aqua y amarillo, le dan un toque de frescura increíble… no me canso de mirarlo :)

Lo mejor de todo es que los cambios lo realizaron los mismos propietarios, con sus propias manos, así que, inspiración al 100%.

The space is evidently the same and yet, so different! Oddly enough, the after looks more spacious. I love the white on white with splashes of teal, gray, and yellow. They make the room feel fresh and cool… can’t stop looking at it! :)

Best of all is the changes were made by the homeowners, which is pretty inspiring for me. :)

Algunas veces bastan pequeños cambios para hacer un gran impacto; ése es el caso de la sala que te voy a mostrar hoy. Los dueños de esta casa antigua decidieron pintar el muro de ladrillos de la chimenea buscando dar más luz al espacio y modernizarlo. Mira las fotos y decide qué te parece…

Sometimes small changes can make a huge impact. That’s completely true in today’s Before and After. The homeowners decided to update the space painting the brick wall. Look at the pictures to see how it all turned out.

Mucho mejor, ¿no te parece? Pocos cambios pequeños hicieron la gran diferencia. Para empezar, se pintó de blanco la pared de ladrillos, y en este caso el espacio mejoró muchísimo. Además, se pintó de azul oscuro el fondo de los libreros, lo cual también sirvió para dar más profundidad. Hay muchos detalles lindos que fueron hechos por la dueña, como por ejemplo el lienzo blanco y amarillo, o el póster de cuadritos azules y blancos. Ahora la sala luce mucho más contemporánea, acorde a la edad de sus dueños. Por cierto, adoro la mesa de centro… me encanta el toque industrial-rústico que le da al lugar.

Much better, don’t you agree? Little changes made a huge difference. For starters, the brick wall was painted white. Then, the back of the built-ins was also painted, but navy blue, which added more depth to the space. There are many cute DIY details, such as the white and yellow chevron canvas, and the blue and white squares artwork. Now the living room looks much more contemporary, so much better! By the way, I love the coffee table. I want one!

Había una vez un comedor que casi nunca se usaba (cualquier similitud con la realidad es pura coincidencia).

Once upon a time, there was an unused formal dining room (any similarities with reality are mere coincidences).

Así que sus dueños decidieron sacar más provecho del espacio y lo convirtieron en…

So its owners thought about taking advantage of the space, and turned it into…

…un increíble estudio/biblioteca lleno de mucho estilo y audaces decisiones!

…an amazing, stylish, and bold home library!

Extrañamente, el espacio luce mucho más amplio ahora, a pesar de haber sido pintado de negro. Se colocó papel tapiz en el detalle del techo, combinando muy bien con el blanco restante y en las molduras. Las cortinas son modernas y atrevidas, y la lámpara de cristal es la cereza del pastel. El detalle de la escalera es quizá mi favorito. Y tú, ¿te animarías a cambiar tu comedor por algo que disfrutarías más?

Oddly enough, the new space looks so much brighter, inspite of the black walls. The inset ceiling was wallpapered, carpet ripped up, add gorgeous green curtains and sculptural light fixture… and then of course, a pretty white ladder too (my favorite). Say hello to a lovely and warm library (I would certainly love to spend my time there). Would you dare to change your dining room into something you’d enjoy more?

Teníamos tiempo planeando los cambios en el cuarto de nuestra hija, sin embargo desde la pared pintarrón, ya no habíamos tenido avances. Así que, sin que lo supiera mandamos a hacer un juego de muebles con escritorio, además de unas repisas, y la llevé a la tienda de pinturas a escoger un color para su cuarto. De repente, un día regresando de la escuela cuál va siendo su sorpresa al encontrar la otra pared de su cuarto transformada.

Eventhough we started planning our daughter’s bedroom makeover for a while, we hadn’t done anything really since the dry erase wall. So, without telling her anything, we had some furniture made (inspired by Ikea) and I took her to the paint store to choose a color. Then suddenly, she found the surprise as she got home from school.

Y combina perfecto con la colcha que encontramos hace algunos meses.

And I love how the color she chose goes so well with her duvet.

Y si a eso agregamos el cambio que ya había del otro lado del cuarto…

And considering the change in the other side of the room…

¡Sofi está encantada; no más rosa! Por supuesto todavía hay cambios que hacer (como quitar las persianas), pero poco a poquito el cuarto de sus sueños se está haciendo realidad…

I know there are still things left to do. Slowly but surely her dream room is becoming a reality! She is so happy (and so are we)!

¡Hola, buenos días! Hoy te quiero compartir otro fabuloso “Antes y después”. Se trata de un cuarto con oficina, ideal para recibir a las visitas. La transformación, justo como me gusta: sencilla e impactante. ¿Quieres ver?

Hi there, good morning! Before I head to my office, I’d like to share with you another amazing “Before and After” I recently discovered. It’s a room/office, perfect for a guest room. The makeover is exactly the type I love: easy and unbelievable. Wanna see?

¿Qué tal, eh? Impresionante, me parece. Tam hizo todos los cambios, desde el arte de madera, hasta colocar las tablas y listones en la pared. Me encanta cómo se aprovechó al máximo el espacio con los mismos muebles que ya se tenían. Otro cambio muy interesante es el de haber aprovechado el clóset para crear una pequeña oficina, pintándola con esténciles de Royal Design.

So pretty! Tam did almost everything, from the artwork to the board and batten. I love how she maximized space with the furniture already in the room. Another huge change was the closet office, with a lovely wall detail made with Royal Design stencils. Love it!

Así que, si tienes algún cuarto que quieras transformar, ¡anímate! Ya ves que sí es posible conseguir cambios increíbles, hasta en los cuartos más pequeños. Todo lo que necesitas es inspiración. ;)

Estoy encantada con las transformaciones, y con el hecho de que los comentarios no han dado problema alguno… ¡yupi! Con esta buena racha, seguimos con otro “antes y después” que encontré, se trata de un dormitorio infantil que pasó de ser el cuarto de un bebé niño al cuarto de una adorable niña. Mira qué hermoso cambio.

I’m happy to say our comments are working without problems so far, and this makes me seriously happy… yay! So, let’s keep up with the good makeovers. El pequeño buró y la cajnera eran muebles viejos que se pintaron, para adecuarse al nuevo look.

Lo más increíble de todo es que la transformación se hizo en un sólo día, pues fue el regalo sorpresa para la niña cumpleañera… ¡tengo muuuucho que aprender! De hecho, esta renovación me recuerda mucho a la habitación de nuestra hija, por el acomodo tan particular de la cama… justo hoy le enseñé las fotos emocionada por pintar su pared con rayas, pero no le gustó mucho la idea… eso de tener una clienta casi adolescente ¡cuesta, cuesta! ;) Pero espero convencerla, me encanta cómo se ven, y creo que lucirían también bien en su cuarto.

The most amazing thing is Jen and her husband did this whole transformation in ONE day… I should learn something from this! In fact, this makeover reminds me so much of our own daughter’s bedroom project, because she has the bed against the wall with the window, very similar. Too bad she’s not into the stripe fashion I so much adore. Having a preteenage client is hard! ;) I hope I can convince her, because I love the way it looks here.
