Este 30 de abril es el día del niño, y para celebrarlo un proyecto diy (hazlo tú mismo) que estoy segura les encantará: hacer una medusa de mar. Esta actividad ayudará a desarrollar su creatividad, imaginación y conciencia ecológica, ya que es una excelente manera de reutilizar materiales que ya tenemos en casa. Diseñada por mi hija, con algunas aportaciones mías, ¡espero lo disfruten juntos!!!!!

On April 30th we celebrate Children’s Day in Mexico, and so I thought I’d share with you an all-time Casa Haus original favorite: our how to make a jellyfish tutorial. This is an easy and fun activity to help develop their creativity, imagination, and eco-concience, reusing stuff already in our homes. Designed by my daughter, with a little help from her mom, I really hope you enjoy it!

Paso 1: Si quieres hacer tus medusas de color, pon unas gotitas de colorante artificial.

Step 1: If you want to try for colored jellyfish, use a few drops of food coloring on your bag.

Paso 2: Usa tu dedo para pintar la bolsa. Prepárate: ¡los dedos te quedarán muy manchados!!!!

Step 2: Use your fingers to paint the bag. Beware of blue fingers!

Paso 3: Voltea la bolsa por el revés. Coloca una liga donde quieras marcar la división entre la cabeza y la umbrella (la parte que parece paraguas). La distancia depende del tamaño de tu bolsa, pero es aproximádamente dos terceras partes de la misma.

Step 3: Turn the bag inside-out. Use the rubber band to mark the division between head and umbrella. The distance depends on the size of your bag, but it’s somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3 of the bag.

Paso 4: Una vez que lo hayas hecho te quedará algo así.

Step 4: Once you put the rubber band, it should look like this.

Paso 5: Usa otra bolsa para cortar espirales. En este paso el niño necesitará tu ayuda.

Step 5: Use another bag to cut out spirals. This is a step for you, since it’s a little tricky for kids.

Paso 6: Coloca el palito por dentro, y sujétalo con otra liga. Aprovecha esta misma liga para colocar las espirales por una de las puntas (la del centro del espiral). Esto formará los tentáculos. Haz tantos como necesites.

Step 6: Place the stick inside, and secure it with another rubber band. Use this same rubber band to place the spirals in place. (You should take the spirals by the center tip). The spirals are very important for they make pretty tentacles. Do as many as you need (the more, the merrier =).

¡Listo! Si dejas la bolsa sin pintar, te quedarán hermosas medusas blancas.

Done! If you leave the bags unpainted, they will make gorgeous white jellyfish.

Estas medusas son increíblemente fáciles de hacer, y los resultados quedan hermosos. Al subir y bajar el palito de madera, la medusa se mueve justo como se mueven las medusas reales, así que queda perfecta. A mí me encanta porque son una manera muy creativa de reutilizar materiales comunes, como la bolsa de plástico.

Como recordarás, hace un mes que instalamos cortinas en nuestra sala, y nos encanta. El cambio principal, además de que el espacio luce más completo y vestido, es que las ventanas y las paredes se ven más amplias, y eso, en un espacio pequeño como el nuestro, es increíble.

As you may remember, about a month ago, we installed curtains in our living room, and we love it. The main change, besides having better window treatments, is the windows and walls look so much larger, and that is really appreciated, especially in a small space, like ours.

Ustedes ya se saben la historia del antes y el después, sin embargo, hay un par de secretos que no les he contado, y hoy les voy a compartir.

You know the before and after story, however, there are a couple of secrets I haven’t told anyone, and I’ve finally managed to have some time to spill the beans.

Primero: Para lograr que las cortinas se vieran como yo quería, tuve que meter tijera. Las cortinas originales eran así:

First: To get the curtains to look the way I wanted, I had to use my scissors. They originally came like this:

Pero yo no las quería con esos “tirantes”, especialmente porque no iba a poner otra cortina encima de ellas. Así que sacrificando altura por vista, me decidí a arreglar el asunto fácilmente:

I didn’t want them hanging like that, especially because I wasn’t putting any other curtains in front of them. So, sacrifying height for looks, I decided to tackle the issue easily:

Fuera tirantes, ¡hola cortinas nuevas!

Out curtain suspenders, hello new window treatments!

El segundo truco, es muy conocido, pero por si acaso tú no lo has escuchado, aquí te va:

“Para crear la sensación de amplitud, coloca las cortinas lo más arriba y a los lados posible”.

The other trick is very popular, but in case you haven’t heard of it, here it goes:

“Create the feeling of larger windows, by hanging the curtains high and wide”.

Este truco es muy sencillo, y el cambio es impresionante… en este dibujo que hice, las dos paredes y las dos ventanas son del mismo tamaño. Lo que cambia, son las cortinas. En nuestro caso, las persianas que teníamos estaban colgadas como en el segundo dibujo: bajas, angostas y cortitas… en pocas palabras, fatal.

This is a very simple trick, and the change really is huge. In this illustration I made, both walls and windows are the same size; the curtains are not. In our case, the shades where hanging like the second picture: low, narrow, and short. Not nice.

cortinas y cojines: Vianney

Cuando recién nos mudamos a esta casa mandamos instalar persianas en todas las ventanas, pues era lo más económico. Nunca nos habían molestado en realidad, hasta que pintamos la pared de la sala con el esténcil. Justo en ese momento se empezaron a ver muy feas, digamos que… pues dejaron de combinar con la “nueva” sala.

When we first moved to this house, we had the cheapest blinds installed in every window. They had never been an issue until we stencilled our living room wall. That’s when the blinds began to look pretty ugly. Let’s say they no longer matched.

Éste era el lado menos conocido de nuestra sala… hasta hoy. Te presento nuestra sala mejorada :)

This was the least known side of our living room… until today. Meet our imporved living room :)

Adoro como pareciera que la ventana ahora es más ancha, dándole amplitud a esa pared.

I love how it seems the window is wider now, making the wall feel a little larger.

Siendo el mismo espacio, también al comedor le tocó su renovación.

Being in the same space, the dining room also had its mini improvement.

Es impresionante el cambio que pueden generar las cortinas en un ambiente. El espacio ya luce mucho más completo, especialmente la sala, con sus accesorios.

It’s amazing the big change window treatments can bring into a space. It looks more complete, especially the living room.

Las cortinas que usamos son el modelo Palmira blanco, de Vianney, y en la sala colocamos además las persianas Calcuta en color chocolate, también de Vianney. Son muy sencillas de instalar… tanto que lo hicimos nosotros solitos.

The curtains are the model Palmira in white, from Vianney, and in the living room we added the Calcuta bamboo blinds in chocolate, also from Vianney, for extra privacy, since this window leads to the street. 

Los cojines son el juego Oasis, de Vianney. Me gustaron por esos tonos azul aqua que tienen, y me encanta cómo van con el gris, además de que los patrones también complementan muy bonito al de la pared.

The pillows are the Oasis model, from Vianney. I liked their gorgeous aqua tones, and I love how both the color and the pattern go with our accent wall.

Poco a poco, nuestra casa sigue tomando forma… Por lo pronto yo estoy muy contenta, no sólo por el cambio, sino porque a mi esposo y a mi hija también les gustó mucho cómo quedó :)

Little by little, our house becomes a home. In the meantime, I’m feeling very happy, not only because of this change, but because both my husband and daughter are loving it :)

Es increíble como bastan pocos elementos para lograr rincones bien diseñados y funcionales. En esta casa, se aprovechó un pequeño muro para crear un recibidor con un pequeño librero y un espejo… ¡mira qué bonito quedó!

I’m always amazed to see small functional, well designed spaces. In this house, a narrow wall was used to create an entryway, with a little bookcase and a mirror… I love how pretty it turned out!

Excelente idea para todos nosotros que tenemos espacios pequeños, ¿no crees? Por cierto, lo que más me gusta de este recibidor es el espejo, el cual ayuda a aumentar la sensación de amplitud. Me encanta que no es un espejo tradicional, y que es un proyecto DIY (o HUM: Hágalo Usted Mismo) que hizo Aldo, el dueño de la casa. Básicamente pegó espejos pequeños sobre una tabla, los colgó, y ¡listo! Y de hecho, a mí me parece que las líneas de unión le dan un toque muy especial y original al espejo.

It’s an amazing small space! I love the mirror and how it helps to bring light and add visual space. I also love that it isn’t a traditional mirror, but it’s actually a DIY project Aldo, the owner, made. It’s basically made up of 12 small mirrors, glued to a board. Clever, huh? I even like how the lines give a very special feel to it.

Por fin llegó la fecha: el momento tan ansiado de estar con nuestros seres queridos y disfrutar las fiestas. Espero, de todo corazón, que pases una excelente Navidad, llena de dicha y felicidad en compañía de todos tus seres queridos.

It’s finally here: the moment to be with our beloved ones and enjoy the holidays. I wish you all the best Christmas, filled with joy shared with all your family and loved ones.

Aquí te dejo nuestro nacimiento… fue un pequeño gran regalo que nos hizo nuestra hija con pequeños pedazos de madera y pintura. ¿Qué te puedo decir? ¡A mí me fascina!!! Y creo que puede ser una excelente idea como actividad para poner a los pequeños a hacer mientras esperan la llegada del Niño Dios y la cena de Noche Buena. Está facilito, muy accesible, y lo mejor, divertido – justo como me gustan los DIY :)

Oh, I leave you with our gorgeous Nativity set. This was a gift our daughter made for us this year with little blocks of wood and paint. I love it so much! I think it’s the perfect activity for little ones this Christmas Eve. Easy, totally non-expensive, and best of all: fun -just like good DIY should be. :)

Diciembre ya está aquí, y justo a tiempo acabo de terminar nuestro nuestro primer calendario de adviento. Nunca habíamos tenido uno, y era algo que siempre había querido, así que el día de ayer me puse a hacer uno facilito, con materiales que tenía en casa, rápido y barato.

December is here, and I just finished our first DIY advent calendar. We had never had one, so yesterday I decided to make one with things I had in hand, easy and cheap.

Hacerlo de verdad fue fácil. Usé sobres de papel, plumones, bases para pastelitos, tijeras y cinta.

Making it was really easy. I used paper envelopes, color pens, mini cupcake cups, scissors and tape.

 Con las bases para pastelitos hice copos de nieve. Básicamente lo que tienes que hacer es doblarlo en cuatro, y luego en tres. Después, haces cortes con las tijeras (como hacer papel picado para el Día de Muertos :). Lo mejor es que, cortes como cortes, te quedará lindo.

I made paper snowflakes with the mini cups, and it was the easiest thing to do. Basically you have to fold the cup in half, then again in half, and then in three. It sounds complicated, but I swear it’s not! Then you make cuts with the scissors, and unfold to discover a beautiful snowflake. Best thing is, no matter how you cut the paper, it will turn out cute!

Una vez que tienes los copos de nieve, todo es fácil: pegar y adornar. Los sobres los pegué a la pared con cinta de doble cara, lo cual funcionó muy bien, aún y con los dulcecitos que tienen.

Then it was just a matter of decorating. I used double tape to stick the envelopes to the wall, and it was perfect even with the candy inside them.

Adoro cómo quedó, y lo mejor es que es lo primero que ves al entrar a la casa :) ¡Ya tenemos un primer arbolito de Navidad! Sobra decir que nuestra hija se entusiasmó mucho :)

I love how it turned out, and best of all: it’s the first thing you see as you walk into our home. Our first Christmas tree is ready! Oh, needless to say, our daughter is super excited about it too :)

Empecemos este lunes con mucha energía e inspiración con un sencillo pero fabuloso proyecto, ideal para esos rincones pequeños. Todo lo que necesitas es pintura y una repisa (si es de las invisibles, mejor).

Let’s kick off this week with lots of energy and inspiration, with a very simple but fabulous DIY, shall we? All you need is paint and a floating shelf!

¿Verdad que está súper fácil? Puedes hacer cualquier diseño de mesa que vaya con tu estilo de decoración, sin embargo, si te gusta la de las fotos, en este link puedes tomar la plantilla. Traza el dibujo sobre la pared, ya sea a mano alzada o con ayuda de un proyector, para después pintarla. El toque final es colgar la repisa encima de la mesa y ¡listo!

I love how easy it is! Of course you could paint any kind of table, depending on your home’s style, but if you like the above, you can get them clicking here. Then it’s just a matter of tracing the design onto the wall (you can use the help of an overhead projector), painting and hanging the floating shelf in place… piece of cake!

Excelente idea para decorar un recibidor, algún rincón de la sala o incluso de la recámara, ¿no crees?

Los palés o tarimas tienen ese encanto rústico-industrial que tanto está de moda últimamente. No es raro pues encontrar otro excelente proyecto HUM (Hágalo Usted Mismo). La base del escritorio se hizo con 4 tablas de tarimas, las cuales fueron fijadas a las patas para posteriormente ser pintadas de blanco. Encima la tarima previamente cortada por mitad… y ¡listo! Un escritorio lleno de carácter y personalidad.

Pallets have that rustic-industrial charm that we’re all craving lately. I’m constantly finding excellent DIY projects with them (read my latest post with many of them here). Today I’m enjoying this beautiful desk, made under 2 hours. The frame was made with pallet boards, then it was attached to the legs, and painted white. On top, a pallet previously cut, and there you have it! A charmful desk!

Hace muchos años tuve la suerte de encontrarme con una venta muy interesante: la biblioteca de una escuela de alemán estaba por cerrar, y prácticamente estaban regalando los libros.

A long time ago, I had the luck of bumping into a quite interesting sale: the local German school was closing its library, and they were practically giving the books away.

Al verlos, yo me enamoré. Aunque no hablo alemán, era una lástima pensar que podrían terminar botados en la basura, así que compré tres. Son libros viejos, con detalles hermosos en lomos y cubiertas, y una tipografía divina.

I simply fell in love with them. Although I don’t speak German, it was such a shame to think where they could end up being dumped, so I bought three. They are old, with beautiful  details and typography.

Estuvieron guardados todo este tiempo, hasta la semana pasada que me acordé de ellos y pensé que eran perfectos para convertirlos en “macetas” y decorar mi mesa de centro.

They remained in a bookshelf until last week, when I bumped into them I found them perfect for planters to decorate my coffee table.

Los pasos, son muy sencillos.

And now, the graphic how-to.

Todo lo que necesitas son libros viejos, pegamento líquido, cutter, una bolsa de plástico y tu plantita favorita. Ésta que ves aquí es una suculenta.

All you need is glue, exacto knife, plastic bag and your favorite tiny plant. This one is a succulent.

¡Me encanta! Y se ve muy bonita en nuestra sala…

Tip: lo ideal es conseguir un libro grueso, para que sólo tengas que usar uno. En mi caso, los libros eran relativamente angostos, así que tuve que cortar ambos para dar la profundidad que las raíces necesitan.

Nota: Me queda claro que este proyecto no es para cualquier libro. Soy amante de ellos, en ningún momento lo hago como una falta de respeto, ni quiero motivar a la destrucción. Por el contrario, creo que los libros son hermosos, y hay algunos que dejan de cumplir su función (por diferentes motivos), y, en lugar de tirarlos, es entonces cuando se podrían usar de esta manera, o muchas otras, reutilizándolos. :)

Tip: The best books for this DIY are thick ones. In my case, both books were rather slim, so I had to cut and glue both to give the roots the space they needed.

Cuando estamos decorando nuestros espacios, constantemente necesitamos soluciones creativas que nos ayuden a maximizar el espacio. Por eso, cuando encontré este proyecto quedé totalmente inspirada, y espero que a ti te pase lo mismo. Es súper fácil de hacerse, y como verás adelante, queda increíble. Ideal si tienes espacios pequeños, y niños pequeños (casi nadie, ¿verdad?)

When decorating, we are constantly needing creative solutions to maximize space. That’s why I felt completely inspired when I found this project from Jen, and I hope you do too. It’s super easy, and amazing.

Todo empieza con el cuarto de juegos de los niños…

It all starts with an already cute kid’s playroom…

Para transformarlo usando libreros como asientos.

…transformed, among many other things, with two bookcases used horizontally as seating area.

Los asientos se hicieron con MDF, espuma y tela para exterior.

The cushions were made with MDF boards, foam and outdoor fabric.

Mucho espacio para sentarse, ¡mucho espacio para guardar cosas!

Instant seating AND storage space!

El librero que se usó fue el Expedit de Ikea, sin embargo y como puedes ver, se puede usar cualquier librero básico (acá en Guadalajara venden unos de pino en la calle). Me encanta cómo luce, especialmente el contraste de gráficos de la pared y el asiento. ¡Creo que se complementan muy bien!

The bookcase used was the Expedit from Ikea, however you can use any basic bookcase (here in Guadalajara you can find some very similar ones made of pinewood literally sold on the streets). I love how gorgeous it looks, especially the contrasting patterns on the wall and cushion. I believe they complement each other beautifully!
