December is filled with celebrations and beautiful things to enjoy for all our senses… one of them, at least here in Mexico, is the traditional fruit punch. Ask anyone. Christmastime smells and tastes like  “ponche” to us. 🙂

This warm drink is yummy and conforting, and quite easy to make (the hardest might be getting all the ingredients, but that is no problem, as you shall see). I recently made it for the Winter issue of Little*Haus magazine, and of course, I had to share it here. That’s why I thought this Friday was a perfect day to share it with you. That way, you can make some for the weekend or for Christmas Eve… or for the whole winter season! Everybody will love it 😉

Like I said before, our Mexican fruit punch is quite easy to make, but it might get complicated for you to get all the ingredients. It’s funny how they may seem exotic to most, but here in Mexico, they are pretty ordinary. That’s why I made the photo above, so you can get to know all the weird ingredients. 🙂 One important thing about this recipe is it doesn’t need to be precise. This recipe is meant to be tweaked and modified to your taste. So, if you can’t find one ingredient, don’t worry, leave it out… it will taste just as good 😉

INGREDIENTS

1 cup hibiscus flowers

4 guavas

1 mild flavored apple

10 short tamarind pods, peeled and seeded

10 tejocotes (this might be the hardest to find, if you don’t substitute with crab apples)

6 prunes

1/2 cup raisins

3 four inch pieces of sugar cane, peeled and cut into thin strips

2 cinnamon sticks (6 inches long)

3/4 cup sugar (white or brown)

Water

Rum (optional)

PREPARACIÓN

DIRECTIONS

1. Put the tejocotes and water (just enough to cover them) in a small pot and bring to boil. Then turn off the heat. Once they cool, take out the tejocotes and peel them, keeping the water.

2. In a large pot, put 4 cups of water and the hibiscus flower, cover it and bring to boil.

3. In the meantime, cut the apple and guavas into squares.

4. Once the water comes to boil, remove the hibiscus flower from the pot. Keep the pot on the flames.

5. Add 3 quarts of water and the remaining ingredients to the pot: peeled tejocotes with their water, tamarind pods, guavas, apple, prunes, raisins, sugar cane sticks, cinnamon, and sugar.

6. Bring everything to boil, then lower flame to minimum.

7. Let it simmer for an hour before serving.

If you’re adding alcohol, pour it into the cup right before serving.
