So here it is. As I shared on instagram, today I tackled this DIY with a can of copper spray paint I had from a previous project and a mug Ana gave me. Turns out painting mugs is super easy and the possibilites are endless. I would even go further: it’s addictive. There are plenty of ideas out there, and I’ve seen they sell special paint for ceramic in different countries, which make it easier, but I haven’t found them in Mexico. So I dared to use what I had at home, experiencing as I went. Here’s how I made it 😉
Los materiales que usé fueron:
– taza
– pintura en spray color cobre
– cinta para enmascarar
– lija 220
You need:
– a mug
– spray paint
– blue tape
– sandpaper 220 grit
First, I put tape according to my design. which was very basic and simple. I left a horizontal strip where the logo was, to make sure I could cover it with paint.
I know paint generally needs a sanded surface to adhere better, so, thinking about durability, I thought of sanding the exposed surface to help the paint adhere. You don’t need to sand too much, just a little to eliminate the extra smooth finish. I thought a 600 grit would work, but ended up using the 220.
Turns out sanding removed the logo! I don’t know if this is what generally happens, but in this case, it came off so easily.
Then I spray painted it outside. I gave it three coats, but didn’t wait too much in between them.
Y luego, cinco minutos después, a quitar la cinta… Y a disfrutar 😉
5 minutes later, it’s time to remove the tape and ejoy! 😉
¡me gustó!
Generally speaking, everything went well, the lines remained clean and straight. However, you know I like sharing everything, so I ask you to please take a look at the horizontal strip (in case you haven’t). See it’s pretty uneven? Turns out, the last piece of tape I removed peeled up the paint. That could have been REALLY bad, but I loved it! Still, this wasn’t supposed to happen 🙂 Why did it happen? My guess is I waited a little bit too long.
I don’t know about you, guys, but I think it looks lovely 🙂
By the way, this is not dishwasher safe. When washing it, lightly rinse the outside, because the paint might come off.
Enjoy!
